The Oklahoma City Thunder are just a dub away from sending Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs to Cancun. Will the Thunder get the job done in Game 6? Or, will the Spurs force the series to go the distance?

Away: Oklahoma City Thunder (3-2)

Projected Starting Five:

  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
  • Luguentz Dort
  • Jared McCain
  • Chet Holmgren
  • Isaiah Hartenstein

The Thunder are no strangers to closeouts. They have been shutting down opponents in the NBA Playoffs since last year, and they have the opportunity to do it again on Friday.

Oklahoma City took control of the Spurs series once again with a commanding 127-114 win at home on Wednesday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander overcame a slow start to finish with 32 points on the strength of a 16/17 shooting from the free-throw line, while Jared McCain sparkled like newly glossed fingernails and finished with 20 points as a starter.

Oklahoma City missed the services of Ajay Mitchell and Jalen Williams, but still trounced San Antonio in a convincing fashion.

It will be a huge boost for the Thunder if at least one of Mitchell or Williams returns for Game 6, but either way, OKC players are going full “next man up” mode. Also turning heads is Alex Caruso, who’s been lights out from deep. He went 5/10 on his threes in Game 5 and is now shooting an absurd 58.1 from deep in the series.

Home: San Antonio Spurs (2-3)

Projected Starting Five:

  • De’Aaron Fox
  • Stephon Castle
  • Devin Vassell
  • Julian Champagnie
  • Victor Wembanyama

The Spurs will go as far as Victor Wembanyama takes them. Given that notion, it was clear why the team struggled in Game 5.

Wemby had 20 points, but he shot just 4/15 from the floor. He was so frustrated that he reportedly did not speak to the media after the game. Julian Champagnie had 22 points while shooting 8/15, but he finished with a game. San Antonio had its moments in Game 5, but the Thunder made the necessary stops and executed when it mattered, something the Spurs have to be better at, especially in the situation they are in.

A return home to San Antonio is a welcome advantage for the Spurs, who demolished the Thunder in Game 4 at Frost Bank Center to the tune of a 103-82 score. In that game, Wemby went off for 33 points on 11/22 shooting, and he could recapture that touch in this all-important showdown in front of a much friendlier crowd.
