The San Antonio Spurs guaranteed at least one more home game in the playoffs when they scored a win in Game 4 to level things up in the Western Conference Finals. Will the Spurs snatch another win in Game 5? Or, will the Thunder move a win away from returning to the NBA Finals with a big response?

Away: San Antonio Spurs (2-2)

Projected Starting Five:

  • De’Aaron Fox
  • Stephon Castle
  • Devin Vassell
  • Julian Champagnie
  • Victor Wembanyama

What Victor Wembanyama wants, Victor Wembanyama gets, and that was pretty much the story for the Spurs in their 103-82 win in Game 4.

Wemby went off for 33 points on 11/22 shooting from the floor. He was aggressive and looked for his shots, even going full-Stephen Curry in an absurd 3-point shot to beat the halftime buzzer. But what can’t be overlooked in San Antonio’s success in that contest was the Spurs’ defense. Wemby and company made life hard for the Thunder’s attack.

Oklahoma City shot just 33 percent from the field and went 6/33 from behind the arc. When they were not bricking shots, the Thunder were turning the ball over. They had 20 in Game 4, leading to an extra 25 points for San Antonio.

Stephon Castle’s defense bothered SGA, with the back-to-back NBA Most Valuable Player scoring 19 points on a salty 6/15 shooting with four turnovers. The Spurs know they have what it takes to take down Oklahoma City, and they can do it on either side of the floor.

Home: Oklahoma City Thunder (2-2)

Projected Starting Five:

  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
  • Luguentz Dort
  • Cason Wallace
  • Chet Holmgren
  • Isaiah Hartenstein

The Thunder are indeed in a fight in this series. Not many expected them to have a smooth ride against San Antonio, and the Spurs are proving it. But the Thunder are at least going to be at home for Game 5, where SGA will be insulated from “flopper” chants.

Oklahoma City needs its MVP to be at an MVP form, especially with injuries in the team’s backcourt. Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell did not play in Game 4, and both could potentially be ruled out for Game 5.

That is not an ideal situation at all for Oklahoma City. Apart from Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder should be looking to get Chet Holmgren a bigger role on offense.

The former Gonzaga Bulldogs star took just a total of 15 shots from the field in the last two games. That is just as many as Isaiah Hartenstein had over the same span. Oklahoma City will also be looking for a bounce-back from Alex Caruso and Jared McCain after the two combined for four points in Game 4, with McCain going 1/10 from the field.
