Away: Denver Nuggets (1-2)
Projected Starting Five:
- Jamal Murray
- Christian Braun
- Cameron Johnson
- Aaron Gordon (Questionable)
- Nikola Jokic
Denver will go as far as Nikola Jokic takes the team, and in Game 2, he put the Nuggets on his shoulders and took them nowhere. In one of his ugliest single-game performances ever, Jokic shot just 7/26 from the field and 2/10 from deep. He finished with 27 points and shot 11/11 from the foul line, but it was clear that Denver wasn’t going to win that game with that kind of brutal inefficiency from its best player.
But in the words of Jamal Murray, “it was an outlier type of game” for Jokic, who can’t be that bad for the second consecutive outing in a row. A big bounce-back from the three-time NBA MVP could be in store this Sunday. Meanwhile, Murray has to get it together as well after he needed 17 shots to get to 16 points in Game 3.
With Aaron Gordon questionable with a calf injury after missing Game 3 with the same issue, the Nuggets will need another player to step up outside of Jokic and Murray. In Game 3, the Nuggets’ non-Jokic/Murray starters combined for just 14 points.
Home: Minnesota Timberwolves (2-1)
Projected Starting Five:
- Donte DiVincenzo
- Anthony Edwards
- Jaden McDaniels
- Julius Randle
- Rudy Gobert
The Timberwolves are taking the fight to Denver, and that has gotten them taking over the series. Rudy Gobert has made life hell for Jokic with his defense. One of the most disrespected stars in the NBA, Gobert has truly made his presence felt in the series with his defense.
Gobert has swatted away and altered many of Jokic’s attempts in the series, and there’s no telling how long he will be able to keep up that defensive tenacity against the Serbian. But with another home game coming up for the Timberwolves, the four-time DPOY should feel a little more comfortable again in dealing with the unenviable challenge of slowing down Jokic. With Gobert as their defensive anchor, the Timberwolves have held Denver to just 40.8% shooting from the field and 30.3% from deep.
Offensively, Minnesota will continue to get Anthony Edwards touches even though he is shooting just 39% in the series. Jaden McDaniels, meanwhile, is helping stabilize the Timberwolves’ offense, as he’s averaged 16.7 points on a 52.4% shooting through three games.
