The Valkyries are already assured of a spot in the WNBA Playoffs, but there is still something to play for Golden State. For one, there remains a chance for them to steal the top seed from the Minnesota Lynx, with several games still left, including Friday’s meeting with the Liberty. Golden State is on a two-game winning streak, with wins over the Lynx (80-66) and the Connecticut Sun (89-64). 

The Valkyries have also dominated New York this season, going 2-0 in the regular-season matchup. In the last meeting between these teams, Golden State went +13 on shot attempts and +9 in points off turnovers. This is an opportunistic squad that ranks first in defensive rating (79.1) and second in defensive turnover rate (16.1%).

Like the Valkyries, the Liberty have secured their tickets to the playoffs. Unlike Golden State, Sabrina Ionescu and company are on the outside of the home-court advantage picture, so winning as many games as possible the rest of the way remains a major goal of the team. 

That’s what they have done of late, going 3-1 straight up in their last four outings, including a 109-102 victory over Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Sunday. The long rest between that Fever showdown and this matchup against Golden State also bodes well for the Liberty, especially with the Valkyries playing on the second night of a back-to-back set. On the season, the Liberty are fourth in offensive rating (110.6) and fourth with a 35.2 percent shooting percentage from behind the arc.
