San Miguel Beermen (3-2)

Projected Starting Five:

  • Juami Tiongson
  • Marcio Lassiter
  • Don Trollano
  • Rodney Brondial
  • June Mar Fajardo

Consecutive wins in Game 4 and Game 5 have the Beermen on the edge of an appearance in the finals. After defeating the Barangay in Game 4, 107-92, San Miguel whipped Ginebra anew in Game 5, 103-92. June Mar Fajardo had 14 points and 12 boards on Friday, but it was CJ Perez and Jericho Cruz that dealt Ginebra the most crushing blows in the contest. Perez had 31 points on 13-for-21 shooting while Cruz came off the bench and scored 27 points with three 3-pointers.

Still, Fajardo acted as the fulcrum for San Miguel’s offense, as his presence skewed Ginebra’s defense and provided lanes to abuse for the likes of Perez and Cruz. As shown in the last two games, San Miguel can generate plenty of offense even without Fajardo going off, thanks to the team’s bunch of shot creators off the dribble and perimeter threats. Juami Tiongson and Marcio Lassiter only had five points together in Game 5, but they will always attract defensive attention and space the floor for San Miguel, which shot 9-for-24 from deep in the last outing.

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (2-3)

Projected Starting Five:

  • Scottie Thompson
  • Stephen Holt
  • Jamie Malonzo
  • Troy Rosario
  • Japeth Aguilar

Ginebra now finds itself on the verge of elimination, having seen its 2-1 series lead turn into a 3-2 disadvantage. The good news for the Barangay is that they’re still very much in the series and should have a big crowd this Sunday behind them at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. It seems that the trick for the Barangay is to find their offense in a more efficient manner.

In Game 5, not one Ginebra starter shot better than 50 percent. Both Scottie Thompson and Jamie Malonzo were 5-for-14 from the field, while Stephen Holt was just 3-for-11. Maverick Ahanmisi, meanwhile, paced Ginebra with 19 points on 6-for-11 shooting, but RJ Abarrientos, who also came off the bench, scored just six points — all from the foul line. The Barangay are a much better team than what their 37 FG% in Game 5 suggests, and a turnaround could be expected of them this Sunday.
