The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel need just one more win to snatch the title, and they can finish the series in Game 6. But the TNT Tropang 5G are not simply going to lay down their weapons. Will Ginebra get the job done in six games? Or, will the Tropang 5G force a Game 7?

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (3-2)

Projected Starting Five:

  • RJ Abarrientos
  • Scottie Thompson
  • Stephen Holt
  • Justin Brownlee
  • Japeth Aguilar

Justin Brownlee went full Justin Brownlee mode — and more — in Game 5 to put Ginebra on the verge of winning the championship.

The Barangay import detonated for 54 points on another efficiently elite evening on Friday, shooting 22/37 from the field, including a 19/30 line from inside the arc. He did what PBA imports have always been expected to do, and that’s get buckets.

At the same time, Brownlee scored all those points and the game still went to overtime. In what has become a familiar narrative in the series, Ginebra needs to get more from Brownlee’s supporting cast outside of RJ Abarrientos, who scored 13 points in Game 5.

Scottie Thompson and Stephen Holt combined for just eight points on an atrocious 2/14 shooting.

If the Barangay want to close it out on Sunday and not wait for another workweek to get the job done, they need to improve on areas beyond Brownlee’s incredible offense, as they allowed TNT to hang around in Game 5 by getting outworked on the glass and letting the Tropang 5G’ perimeter shooting click.

TNT Tropang 5G (2-3)

Projected Starting Five:

  • Jayson Castro
  • RR Pogoy
  • Calvin Oftana
  • Kelly Williams
  • Chris McCullough

Facing a 3-2 series deficit, the Tropang 5G can’t afford to have a letdown game from this point forward. Despite 38 points from Chris McCullough and 23 from RR Pogoy in a bounce-back performance in Game 5, TNT still fell short of their Friday goals, largely because they could not stop Brownlee.

The Ginebra import is unlikely to go off for 50 or more points for the second game in a row, but he is clearly very capable of torching TNT. But the Tropang 5G can’t help Ginebra’s cause by shooting themselves in the foot. Crucial turnovers hurt the Tropang 5G in Game 5.

Overall, they only had 10 turnovers to Ginebra’s 12, but some of those happened in the crucial portions of the contest. Minimizing self-inflicted wounds will be crucial for TNT. The Tropang 5G can’t allow Brownlee and the Barangay to get extra touches.

TNT won the possession battle in Game 5, taking 10 more attempts from the field than Ginebra, but wasted a few touches in the crucial parts of the game. In any case, Calvin Oftana, Jordan Heading and Pogoy have to deliver.

Heading had 13 points off the bench on Friday, while Oftana had another cold outing, scoring nine points on 4/10 shooting.
