When news came out that the Philadelphia 76ers were acquiring Jaylen Brown and signing LeBron James, postseason and in turn, championship aspirations were renewed and the idea of having a vaunted lineup without having to give much up in return certainly made Sixers fans excited. 

There were, of course, questions as to what this would mean for VJ Edgecombe. 

Edgecombe had a stellar start to his rookie year and the athleticism, two-way ability, and big-game composure were on full display during the regular season and in the playoffs. Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper were the main draws from the 2025 NBA Draft class, but Edgecombe was not far behind, showcasing the poise and maturity that belied his age and endeared him to the city of Philadelphia. 

However, the addition of Brown, James, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Anfernee Simons creates some overlaps and a reallocation of minutes, especially since the four players can play the same roles and positions Edgecombe assumed last season. But all is not lost. 

There will certainly be some adjustments to be made with the change in the role, and it may be an uncomfortable experience. But with the moves coming early in the offseason means there is time to make tweaks and work things out. Moreover, the silver lining here is that Edgecombe will have a ton of mentors at his disposal, as he can learn from veterans with championship experience and those who have had to take on various roles for different teams. 

Even with things changing, Edgecombe can still find ways to contribute. His versatility allows him to take part in most plays, defend multiple positions, and find ways to score when things break down. Moreover, his composure, instincts, and durability are traits you can’t teach and it’ll be hard for Sixers head coach Nick Nurse to keep him on the bench for so long. 

Edgecombe’s durability (75 games played) will also be useful as Brown (71), James (60), Caldwell-Pope (51), Simons (55), and even Tyrese Maxey (70) played in fewer games. Nurse will likely look to Edgecombe to pick up the slack and in doing so, he will learn not only how to play with who is healthy, but also learn where he can contribute. Who knows, when everyone moves on, he could be the one to take over and lead the Sixers franchise. 

But right now, VJ Edgecombe and the Philadelphia 76ers are looking to go on a deep postseason run in 2026-27. They’ve been the subject of memes, a harsh fan base, and the weight of potential and expectations. Now, they have a lineup that could change their fortunes and while Edgecombe may be taking the short end of the stick right now, he could be in this for the long run if he plays his cards right.
