Whenever Victor Wembanyama decides to stop fucking around on a basketball court, he’s simply not a normal human being. The alien disguised as a Frenchman’s latest on-court outburst was the latest proof, and if you didn’t watch the game, I suggest you catch the replay when you have a chance.

The Spurs star finished with 52 points, 24 rebounds, two assists, two steals and eight blocks in 34 minutes, and he turned the ball over exactly once in a 112-111 win over the Dallas Mavericks. Read that line one more time. Fifty-two points, 24 boards, eight blocks and ONE goddamn turnover. Both the 52 points and the 24 rebounds were career highs, and according to Yahoo Sports, no player in NBA history had ever posted a game with those numbers.

Wemby had a bad game to make up for

The funny part is that this came right after one of his worst nights of the season. Wembanyama had just 12 points on 5 of 15 from the field with five turnovers against the Utah Jazz on Monday, and if you’ve been reading this site, you know he already had a 1 of 13 night in the opener, too. Shaquille O’Neal compared the bounce-back to Kobe Bryant’s habit of answering a bad game with a monster one. “When you’re a great player, you never want to have two bad games in a row,” Shaq said, per Heavy.

The first half was ridiculous

Wemby had 29 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks and two steals by halftime, and at one point he swatted three shots in a span of 13 seconds, according to Bleacher Report. The AP noted that he became the first player in the play-by-play era, which goes back to 1996-97, with at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a single half. San Antonio went into the break up 17. At that point, the only real question was whether he’d get to 60.

The Mavericks made it way too interesting

Wemby didn’t hit his 60, and the Spurs nearly blew it. Dallas clawed back in the second half behind Kyrie Irving, who finished with 29 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Naji Marshall, who gave them 22 off the bench. Cooper Flagg, who passed Kevin Durant on the list of points scored as a teenager during the game, finished an alley-oop and-1 late, and P.J. Washington followed it up with a three that put the Mavs up three. Flagg ended up with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Washington had 21 points and 10 boards.

That’s when Wemby answered with a game-tying three, which was his only make from deep all night on 1 of 8 shooting, and then hit the go-ahead free throw in the final minute. Irving got a look at a game-winner in the closing seconds, but it didn’t fall, and the Spurs escaped.

Wemby carried a team that couldn’t hit a shot

However, the scariest part is how little help he got from the outside. The Spurs shot just 13.9% from three as a team, Devin Vassell went 0 of 8 from the field and Stephon Castle needed 20 shots to get his 17 points. Dylan Harper was the bright spot with 21 points on 9 of 15 shooting, and Castle at least chipped in 10 rebounds. Wemby took care of the rest at the charity stripe, where he went 19 of 23.

The win improved San Antonio to 6-2, and Shaq summed it up as well as anyone. “We’ve never seen a player like him do the things that he can do,” he said.

For now, the rest of the West should probably hope Wemby stops having bad games. Let’s see what he has planned for the next one.
