When you think of the NBA’s best scorers, Caris LeVert would not be on the list. But today, the 6’6 shooting guard lost his mind against the Celtics.

Playing against a hostile crowd at the TD Garden, LeVert took matters into his own hands by leading the Brooklyn Nets to a surprise 129-120 victory over the Boston Celtics.

To illustrate how special of a night it was for LeVert, one must realize that the fourth-year player has never even averaged 20 points per game for a season. He’s gone from 8.2, 12.1, 13.7, to 16.3 PPG year-on-year.

None of that mattered today.

By the end of the third quarter, LeVert had only scored 14 points. The Nets were down 67-84, and it looked like another whooping was on hand for the squad that had officially lost Kyrie Irving for the season.

LeVert didn’t feel like following the script. He went off for 37 points combined in the fourth quarter and overtime, and he did it in style.

Perhaps the most memorable sequence was when he made three consecutive shots from beyond the arc in around a minute and a half, a personal 9-0 run that cut the Celtics’ lead to 100-104.

He was also involved in several other key plays, including giving three assists to his teammates that also led to seven points. He was also responsible for sending the game to OT, first by assisting DeAndre Jordan to make the game 115-118, then drawing a foul with 0.2 seconds left in the game and calmly sinking all three free throws.

Then, he carried the performance into OT, being the only the Net to score with 11 points in extra time. He didn’t make any threes, but he showed great poise by hitting floaters, pullup jumpers, shots around the basket, and three of his four free throws.

All I can say is, damn, what a game. It’s a great reminder about just how much talent and hard work it takes to even make an NBA roster. Even the players you don’t normally consider stars are still one of the best 450 players in the world.

I’m not expecting LeVert to suddenly become a world-beater, but today, I want to celebrate him. He deserves his night in the spotlight. Let’s all show a little love toward #22.
