We’ve only gone through about an eighth of the NBA season so far, but we’re already seeing a number of big names getting themselves hurt. Stephen Curry, who’s out until next year, isn’t the only one to be hit by the injury bug.

Here’s a list of recent major injuries and the implications that they have on their team.

D’Angelo Russell

The Warriors really have some rotten luck. D’Angelo Russell was playing pretty well in Steph Curry’s absence, but he’s now gone down with a thumb injury. He was averaging 24.3 points and 6.7 assists before the warriors announced that he would be away for a couple of weeks.

He even scored a career high 52 points against the Wolves. The Warriors are far from the team that made five straight NBA finals. They’ve got the worst record in the league and it’s not going to get any better without their last proven scorer getting hurt.

Otto Porter Jr.

Otto Porter Jr. had a foot injury a few weeks ago, and it looks like he might be seeing some extended time out. Bulls coach Jim Boylen says he might be out weeks. He’s missed four games in a row so far.

The Bulls being careful makes a lot of sense, especially since he’s owed $106 million dollars over the next four years.

Gordon Hayward
You wouldn’t blame Gordon Hayward if he said he had some rotten luck. Two years ago, he broke his leg during his debut for the Boston Celtics, and missed the rest of the season. He then spent most of the next season trying to get back in the swing of things, averaging 11.5 point – his lowest since his rookie season in Utah.

He seemed to have been getting back in the swing of things again, seeing averages of 18.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists. He then had a collision with LaMarcus Aldridge, and broke his hand. He needed surgery, and will miss about six weeks of game time.

It’s an unfortunate event for Hayward, because the Celtics are also looking like a true contender in their first post-Kyrie Irving season.

De’Aaron Fox
There may have been a lot of noise regarding teammate Buddy Hield’s contract in the offseason, but there’s no denying that De’Aaron Fox was the breakout star of the Sacramento Kings’ surprising 2018-19 season. The Kings were in the playoff hunt in a difficult Western Conference for a large part of the season, and Fox’s speed, fearlessness, and improved shot helped open up the floor for Hield and others to take advantage of.

He’s been diagnosed with an ankle sprain and will be out until at least early December. This is a huge blow for the Kings because they’ve already started the season with a lot of losses, and last year’s lottery pick Marvin Bagley is also out with a broken hand.

Khris Middleton
Khris Middleton is a perfect teammate for Giannis Antetokounmpo. His skillset, and his scoring (18.5 PPG) have been a boon for the Greek Freak. He’s going to miss 3-4 weeks with a thigh contusion, and the Bucks, who are surprisingly fourth in the Eastern Conference, will sorely miss him until his return.

Kyle Lowry

Kyle Lowry is out for a couple more weeks after fracturing his thumb, suffering the injury in a game against the New Orleans Pelicans. He’s been one of the keys to the Toronto Raptor’s surprising start after Kawhi Leonard’s departure, and it’s going to be hard to replace his 21.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 6.5 assists.

While the shorthanded Raptors did manage to beat the Lakers, they’re going to be hard-pressed to find sustained success without their resurgent star point guard.
