The Valkyries continue to prove that they own Dallas this season. They swept the Wings in three regular-season meetings and blasted Paige Bueckers and company again in Game 1 on Monday, 104-80. Golden State leaned on a balanced attack to crush the Wings, with Cecilia Zandalasini pacing the team with 22 points and Gabby Williams adding 20.
Even the Valkyries’ bench was solid, as Tiffany Hayes put up 21 points. The game seemed over in the first half, as Golden State dropped 37 points in the second quarter while allowing only 11 to the visiting Wings. Golden State’s pace and outside shooting also flummoxed the Wings, with the Valkyries taking 14 more shots from the floor while hitting 18 3-pointers and holding Dallas to just 6/20 from beyond the arc.
Golden State just seems to have the Wings’ number, and now, the Valkyries just need a win to send Dallas to vacation.

Dallas entered the playoffs having won seven of eight games, but the Wings’ momentum was not enough to overcome the Valkyries in Game 1.
But one thing about Dallas is that it got a very good showing from Bueckers in her WNBA playoffs debut. A proven winner, the former UConn Huskies star paced the Wings with 21 points on 9/10 shooting in Game 1. That kind of efficiency on such a healthy shot volume and despite the defensive focus on her was admirable, to say the least.
But Bueckers can’t do it all, and she’ll need her supporting cast to deliver in Game 2. Jessica Shepard, who averaged 14.5 points in the regular season, laid an egg and missed all seven shots from the field in the series opener, while Arike Ogunbowale (15.3 points in the regular season) put up 10 points on 2/7 shooting. Playing at home in Game 2 can do wonders for the Wings.
