The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings finished the injury riddled TNT squad in just five games in the 2020 Philippine Cup Finals.

Despite taking the win convincingly, Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone believes that the Tropang Giga will be making a lot of noise in the near future.

“I think everybody is gonna have a rivalry against Talk ‘n Text, their prime is really on another level. They’re fairly young. Jayson, I think he’s got a couple of good years left. I think if he can stay healthy and aside from that their core is very young with Troy, Pogoy, Enciso, Bobby Ray, (Poy Erram). They have a really young core that they can build on and I think they’re just gonna get better and better,” he said during the post-game interview.

“I think for all I care they’re gonna be the dominant team over the next few years. Of course, San Miguel will do something about that as well as the other teams,” he added.

Cone, the winningest coach in PBA history with 23 titles, recognizes their rivalry with TNT but he also acknowledges that they’re not the only team that’s out to get them.

“We’ll always have a corporate rivalry with Talk ‘n Text, San Miguel will have it, Purefoods will have it and I think that will just continue to blossom but there are some other teams out there that will have a say about it and compete for the championship and hopefully we’ll be in the mix as well,”

Throughout the season, the Tropang Giga were the heavy favorites to win it all because of the deadly five-man core of Jayson Castro, RR Pogoy, Ray Parks, Troy Rosario and Poy Erram.

However, in the much-awaited series between the two heavy favorite teams in the league, TNT stars Castro and Parks suffered injuries which took away a significant portion of the blue and yellow squad’s firepower.

Parks suffered a calf injury in Game 1, while Castro suffered a knee injury in Game 4.

Despite the absence of two stars, Pogoy, Rosario and Erram still kept the series highly contested.

Pogoy finished the series with averages of 26.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.6 steals in 42% shooting at the field. Erram averaged a double-double with 14.0 point and 13.2 rebounds with 1.6 blocks while Rosario put up 12.4 points and 5.8 rebounds.

Cone and the Kings now have their eyes set on next season as they try to pull off winning the coveted Grandslam. But heading into their next goal, he knows that things would only get tougher. And a team that he believes that will be in the mix is Phoenix.

“I also think another team that people should their eye on is Phoenix. They’re a talented team that has created chemistry and they could be a team that would compete in the next few years as well,” he said.
