Perhaps the first thing to know about Ginebra is that Justin Brownlee is not the team’s import this conference, as the naturalized Filipino forward is dealing an injury. For the moment, the Barangay will have Riley Grigsby as their reinforcement. 26-year-old Grigsby has NBA G League experience with stints with the Santa Cruz Warriors and Sioux Falls Skyforce. 

It will be interesting to see whether Grigsby will be able to replicate the many things Brownlee does for the Barangay, but at the very least, having a healthy and young import is a plus already for Ginebra, which has not lost to the Fuel Masters in two years, going 5-0 in that matchup over that stretch. In their last meeting, the Barangay crushed Phoenix in May to the tune of a 112-81 score.

Phoenix is red hot to star the conference, and this game against the Barangay will be a test of whether the Fuel Masters are for real. After thwarting the Magnolia Hotshots in their conference opener, 98-86, the Fuel Masters pulled off a thrilling come-from-behind 98-97 victory over the Meralco Bolts for a 2-0 start in the Governors’ Cup. 

Phoenix’s efficiency on offense is lifting the team up, as the Fuel Masters are second in the league thus far with a 59.4 eFG%. Meanwhile, the team appears to be going all-in amid its early success in the campaign by trading for Rain or Shine Elasto Painters’ two-way guard Gian Mamuyac. It remains to be seen whether Mamuyac will be ready to give it a go for the Ginebra game, but as things stand, Phoenix is a formidable team.
