TNT Tropang 5G (2-3)
Projected Starting Five:
- Simon Enciso
- Jordan Heading
- Rey Nambatac
- Calvin Oftana
- Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser
TNT’s back is pressed hard against the wall, but the series is not over until it’s over. A team like the Tropang 5G surely has what it takes to turn the tables on San Miguel amid a 3-2 series deficit following a 96-82 loss in Game 5 on Friday.
The sizzling shooting TNT had in Game 4 faded in the following contest, but not before the Tropang 5G shot 6/9 from deep in the first quarter. TNT has never shied away from pulling the trigger from long distance, so expect the Tropang 5G to keep launching them, as they continue to stay true to the offensive blueprint that got them this far.
Calvin Oftana had 20 points to lead TNT in Game 5, as the former San Beda Red Lions star remains a big threat. Oftana and Jordan Heading lead TNT’s attack, with Rey Nambatac expected to provide ample scoring as well, but where the Tropang 5G fell mightily short in Game 5 was on defense, as San Miguel got 18 offensive rebounds and came up with a total of 51 boards to just 36 by TNT.
Winning the glass battle will be a point of emphasis for the Tropang 5G, who can’t afford to see San Miguel win the possession battle by that much again.
San Miguel Beermen (3-2)
Projected Starting Five:
- Chris Ross
- CJ Perez
- Marcio Lassiter
- Moala Tautuaa
- June Mar Fajardo
One more win, and it’s celebration time for San Miguel. But the Beermen can’t look ahead, as TNT is still a huge threat. Game 5 was a surprise win for San Miguel, given who actually led them to the victory. Rodney Brondial went full 2008 Leon Powe, as he fired 17 points to lead all SMB scorers. Brondial went 6/8 from the field and even hit a 3-pointer while cramping up, which goes to show the absurd zone he was in.
Another one from San Miguel’s supporting cast who had a big night in Game 5 was Kris Rosales, who stepped up with 12 points off the bench, while Don Trollano provided 14 points. Jericho Cruz is a weapon the Beermen are still waiting to get hot, and after five games, he could finally get it going in San Miguel’s potentially series-clinching win this Sunday.
In any case, the Beermen are counting on June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez to anchor their attack. Fajardo muscled his way to a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds in Game 5, while Perez had a pedestrian 10-point output, though he was a plus-8 on the floor.
