A marquee matchup between two heavyweights is in store this Wednesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, as the TNT Tropang 5G goes for win No. 2 this conference against the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, who are looking for their first victory.

TNT Tropang 5G (1-0)

Projected Starting Five:

  • Rey Nambatac
  • Roger Pogoy
  • Calvin Oftana
  • Glenn Khobuntin
  • Henry Galinato

The Tropang 5G dismantled the Phoenix Fuel Masters in their first game of the conference, with Rey Nambatac announcing his return to action in a big way. The former Letran Knights star guard, who missed a lot of games late in the previous season,  lit up the Fuel Masters for 22 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the floor.

Meanwhile, another ex-NCAA star in Calvin Oftana, pumped in 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds. As always, TNT’s outside shooting played a big role in the Tropang 5G’s victory, as the team hit 15 threes on a 42.9 percent success rate. The Tropang 5G will not shy away from jacking up outside shots, and it could be their big weapon again this Wednesday versus the Barangay, who got torched repeatedly from deep by the Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots in the season opener.

The addition of Kevin Ferrer also seemed like a great move by TNT, as he can be a quality source of offense off the bench, which he was in the 93-78 win over Phoenix, as he scored 12 points with four 3-pointers as a reserve.

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (0-1)

Projected Starting Five:

  • Scottie Thompson
  • Maverick Ahanmisi
  • Stephen Holt
  • Troy Rosario
  • Japeth Aguilar

Ginebra took a stumble right out of the gate, as the Barangay lost to the Hotshots, 80-73. Perhaps still rusty from a long vacation, the Barangay’s sloppy ball security helped cause their doom in that Manila Clasico matchup, where Ginebra had 21 turnovers.

Those blunders were converted into 27 points by the Hotshots, whose 12 turnovers were turned into just 10 points by Ginebra. Scottie Thompson had three of those turnovers while barely contributing to the offense. He scored zero points while missing all five attempts from the field. Thompson also dished out just an assist. It was a truly rough outing for the former PBA MVP, but it’s also hard to imagine him having such an ugly performance two games in a row, so expect a better showing from him this Wednesday.

Rookie Sonny Estil turned heads in the Magnolia game with nine points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench. He could be carving out a regular role in Tim Cone’s rotation, but it’s still the likes of Stephen Holt, RJ Abarrientos and Thompson who should show the way for the team.
