An important battle between the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and the TNT Tropang 5G is on tap this weekend, as each team looks to strengthen their chances of securing a twice-to-beat advantage in the upcoming playoffs. This will also be a rematch of the previous two PBA Finals series, but this time minus the imports.

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (6-3)

Projected Starting Five:

  • Scottie Thompson
  • RJ Abarrientos
  • Stephen Holt
  • Troy Rosario
  • Japeth Aguilar

The Barangay will look to score some measure of revenge against TNT, as these teams meet for the first time since the finals of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Ginebra comes into this game with some momentum after edging the Magnolia Chicken Timplados in last Sunday’s Manila Clasico. The Barangay have won four of their last five games, with the only blemish over that stretch coming from an 82-73 loss to the Meralco Bolts.

In their 85-81 takedown of Magnolia, the Barangay overcame a 10-point deficit in the final quarter to score a come-from-behind victory. Japeth Aguilar led the way for Ginebra with 17 points and 11 boards, while Troy Rosario had 15 points. That tandem in the frontcourt by Aguilar and Rosario could spell trouble for TNT. With Jamie Malonzo and Stephen Holt, Ginebra has great size and shooting out on the perimeter as well.

TNT Tropang 5G (6-3)

Projected Starting Five:

  • Simon Enciso
  • RR Pogoy
  • Calvin Oftana
  • JP Erram
  • Kelly Williams

It’s a much shorter turnaround for the Tropang 5G, as they just played last Friday against the Blackwater Bossing. However, they didn’t really have to sweat a lot in their 108-82 demolition of Blackwater. With that win, the Tropang 5G also extended their win streak to six games, moving further away from their slow start to the conference. Prior to that streak, TNT opened its Philippine Cup campaign with three losses in a row, but the team clearly has since turned things around.

The win over Blackwater showed TNT at its best on both ends. The Tropang Giga shot 49.3 percent from the floor and connected on 45.7 percent of their attempts from behind the arc. Defensively, TNT held Bossing to just 36.5 FG% and 34.6 3FG%.  There is also the possibility for sharpshooting Jordan Heading to make his TNT debut after his trade to the Tropang 5G from the Converge FiberXers.
