Things started to look good for the 76ers in the first quarter, where they surged to a 19-29 lead. However, the Miami Heat showed their own dominance by outscoring their opponents 37-19 to close out the first half.
The third quarter was a back and forth affair that didn’t do much to budge the scoreline, but the fourth quarter had a ton of great moments.
A Kendrick Nunn desperation heave gave the Heat a 99-83 lead with 7:09 left in the fourth quarter – making the boos that rained down on 76ers seem justified.
After all, they were getting dominated on their own floor, down 16 points, and looked like they had given up on the game.
However, from the 6:06 mark, the home team went on its own 14-2 run, eventually bringing themselves back to within four points at 101-97. The rest of the game was a back and forth affair, and Philly will regret not being able to take advantage of a pair of missed free throws from Kendrick Nunn that gave them possession with 11.2 seconds left while only down 106-104. Instead of going for a game-tying basket, they gave Al Horford the ball for a 3 that didn’t make it.
Kendrick Nunn (26 PTS, 4 REB, 5 AST) and Bam Adebayo (23 PTS, 9 REB, 5 AST) led the scoring for the Heat. Jimmy Butler (14 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST) continued to provide a strong veteran presence, and was responsible for drawing a foul on Joel Embiid that helped add a cushion to the lead with 33.9 seconds left.
Embiid (22 PTS, 19 REB,) will be disappointed to lose that game. So will Tobias Harris (20 PTS, 4 REB).
