The Zaccharie Risacher era in Atlanta is now over – okay, it’s not like it even started or looked like it was about to at any point.

The Frenchman, who was selected by the Atlanta Hawks first overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, was part of a three-team trade earlier this week that sent him to the Dallas Mavericks, elite on-ball defender Lu Dort and Ryan Nembhard to the Hawks, and three second-round picks to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

By simple definition, Risacher is a “bust.” High picks should either be sensational, show enormous potential, or at least be a respectable contributor. He was unable to fully check any of those boxes.

However, as we all know: not all busts are created equal. Risacher is yet another casualty of a weird, unheralded draft class, wherein there are studs, but no one specifically stood out and the process thus became a bigger crapshoot than it already is.

If that’s not enough, the Hawks, who won the lottery with only 3% chance, had talent and/or depth at multiple positions. As strange as it may sound, they were out of position with the No.1 pick.

Risacher joined a squad that were stacked at his position – Jalen Johnson, DeAndre Hunter, Dyson Daniels, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Caris LeVert, and Bogdan Bogdanovic . The challenge was three-fold for any youngster, especially for a wide-eyed,19-year-old from overseas, who’s suddenly the hotshot first overall selection.

While he did as much as he could, starting in 73 of his 75 games as a rookie and posting a solid numbers (12.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 45.8 FG%, 35.5 3FG%), he just couldn’t hold on to his spot and steadily fell out of head coach Quinn Snyder’s rotation by the latter part of his second season, averaging just 17.4 minutes in the last month of 2025-26 and playing in just three of the six games in their first-round series vs. the New York Knicks. 

Johnson and Daniels developed rapidly as well, and it was too hard to keep up. In addition, the Hawks also snagged a top 8 pick in the 2026 draft via trade with the New Orleans Pelicans, which further lessened his value on the roster.

Young, who has also been traded since, showed support for his former teammate following the trade.

As Risacher moves on, Dallas it is. It’s not a particularly favorable team either, but a fresh start is a fresh start. It doesn’t hurt that he’s still only 21 years old – we’ve seen plenty of breakout seasons from older players.

Nevertheless, there’s athleticism, energy, outside shooting, and defense, as inconsistent as it may be. The Mavericks are a developing team with young players and veterans, and there’s new hope for someone in Risacher’s position to thrive in whichever way.
