After winning just eight games in the 2024 WNBA season, the Dallas Wings scored a major win in the offseason when they took UConn Huskies star Paige Bueckers as the first-overall pick at the 2025 WNBA draft.
There’s still a lot to learn for Bueckers in the pros, but she’s comfortably assumed the role as one of the top go-to players for Dallas alongside the likes of Arike Ogunbowale and DiJonai Carrington.
On Thursday, Bueckers wasn’t gun shy again, pacing the Wings with 21 points, albeit in an 88-85 home loss at the hands of the Atlanta Dream at College Park Center in Arlington. She wasn’t exactly efficient with her shot against the Dream, going just 8-for-20 from the field, though, she made three of her seven attempts from behind the arc.
And at least she didn’t waste possessions by turning the ball over. She didn’t even commit a single turnover while adding seven assists to her name. With that, Bueckers became just the first rookie ever in the WNBA to score at least 20 points, drop five dimes and have zero turnovers in the same game.
To date, Bueckers is leading the Wings in scoring with 18.3 points per game while shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from deep.
Luisa Geiselsoder chipped in 12 points for the Wings while Haley Jones and Ogunbowale each contributed 12 points, which were ultimately negated by Naz Hillmon’s clutch, game-winning 3-pointer for Atlanta.
Dallas dropped to 8-20 after the loss to the Dream. With the third-fewest wins so far, Bueckers and the Wings will have to turn things around sooner rather than later to make the WNBA playoffs.
Looking ahead, the Wings will take on the Indiana Fever this coming Saturday at American Airlines Center in Dallas.
