Editors note: this article was updated on May 9, 2020, to reflect the cancellation of one fight due to Jacare Souza testing positive for COVID-19.

UFC 249 is just around the corner, airing this Sunday morning, and it looks like it’s going to be an action-packed card. It’s the first major live sporting event that many of us are going to be able to enjoy after a long hiatus, so everyone is understandably pumped up for the fights.

Here are the five fights we can’t wait to see.

Tony Ferguson vs. Justin Gaethje

The main event needs no explanation. Tony Ferguson has always been an exciting fighter, known for an unorthodox style that confuses and then overwhelms opponents. Originally slated to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov, their cursed matchup got cancelled for the fifth time leading to this replacement fight instead.

Standing in the opposite corner to him will be Justin Gaethje, an aggressive fighter who has a 21-2 record in MMA. There should be fireworks in the octagon when they meet, and we’ll see if Gaethje’s stand-up focused style will be enough to beat the enigmatic Ferguson.

Henry Cejudo vs. Dominick Cruz

Some may be confused as to how Dominick Cruz managed to secure a title fight after such a long hiatus, and for good reason. He hasn’t fought since December 30, 2016, where he lost via decision to Cody Garbrandt.

However, you can’t doubt Cruz’ pedigree. The bantamweight division was once his stomping ground, and at 35, he might still have enough in the tank. He’s going to have a tough challenge against the reigning champ, Henry Cejudo, who is the one who ended Demetrious Johnson’s long reign at the top.

By the time they see each other in the octagon, it will also have been a full year since Cejudo last fought. Let’s hope he’s kept his game sharp while spending a ton of time trolling people on social media.

Donald Cerrone vs. Anthony Pettis

Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis are both fighters who like to push the pace and brawl, but are clearly no longer in their primes. Cerrone’s most recent fight saw him lose to Conor McGregor and his unexpected shoulder strikes, but the overall tale has been one of woe, a 5-7 record in his last 12 fights.

Pettis, on the other hand, has a 4-8 record in his last 12 fights, including a two-fight losing streak after getting submitted by Carlos Diego Ferreira and outpointed by Nate Diaz (who was on his own comeback after years of inactivity).

While the odds favor Pettis (1.61) , don’t count the old Cowboy (2.11) out just yet. One thing’s for certain: there will be violence. The last time they met in 2013, Pettis viciously took out Cowboy with a nasty kick to the body in the first round. I’m sure Cowboy wants to avenge that loss.

Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza vs. Uriah Hall

This fight has been cancelled due to Jacare Souza testing positive for COVID-19.

Uriah Hall hoped to become the next UFC superstar after his knockout prowess in The Ultimate Fighter made him famous. However, he’s been quite the journeyman, compiling a 15-9 record. He’s riding a two-win streak and hopes to make it three in a row against the 40-year-old Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza – a former middleweight contender who is returning to the division after a losing foray into light heavyweight.

Souza has wins against former champs like Robbie Lawler, Vitor Belfort, and Chris Weidman, and doesn’t shy away from a challenge. His 26-8 record will be put to the test by Hall, though, who still has the ability to change any fight with a single strike.

The odds favor Jacare (1.71) over Hall (1.97).

Carla Esparza vs. Michelle Waterson

Carla Esparza and Michelle Waterson could put up an interesting fight, especially since they’re currently eighth and ninth in the UFC strawweight rankings and on a quest to move up.

While they probably won’t be challenging for a title any time soon, considering how Zhang Weili has been dominating the division lately, that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth watching. We look forward to seeing who is victorious.

Esparza (1.61) is favored to win over Waterson (2.12).
