It’s always special when you have two superstars face each other. At the center of today’s game between the LA Lakers and Dallas Mavericks were Luka Doncic and LeBron James, and both of them put in work in a game that needed two overtimes to determine a winner.

Doncic got the best of James this time around with 35 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists, a steal and a block with five turnovers. Even after going scoreless for a large stretch in the second half, it was Doncic who was ready to make a clutch three that tied the game in regulation and forced overtime after the Lakers couldn’t convert on the other end. Doncic finished the game shooting 14 of 28 overall and 4 of 9 from beyond the arc.

The Lakers had their chances to win the game in the first overtime, especially after an inexplicable sequence where Jason Kidd elected to have Doncic shoot flagrant free throws instead of one of his better-shooting teammates, and then they also whiffed on their attempt in the extra possession from the foul. However, after James made a pair of free throws to give the Lakers a lead with 1:11 left in the first OT, Doncic again made a stepback three to tie the game. Neither team managed to score in the last 47.1 minutes of that extra period as their tired legs started to show.

Spencer Dinwiddie and Christian Wood stepped up in the second overtime to help the Mavericks take the away win, and Wood even managed to get an important block after rolling his foot.

James will be disappointed with the loss, as he struggled from the field and shot 9 of 28. He still finished with 24 points, 16 rebounds, nine assists and two steals, but it wasn’t enough to carry the team. Russell Westbrook led them in scoring with 28 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals, and even shot 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. The Lakers’ starters went a combined 1 of 19 from three, which made it very difficult to win the game.
