It’s funny to think that just a few days ago, people were still wondering whether or not Kevin Durant would suit up for Team USA’s opening game of the Olympics against Serbia. Durant wasted absolutely no time in getting involved for his squad, notching 21 points in first half on a perfect 8 of 8 performance from the field. LeBron James, of course, put his own stamp to the half with 12 points on a perfect 5 of 5 shooting as well, which helped the Americans recover from a slow 10-2 start into a 58-49 halftime lead.

That first half from Durant was a great reminder of how he put Team USA on his back on the Tokyo Olympics. Durant averaged 20.7 points while shooting 52.9% from the field in Tokyo and it looks like he’s ready to put on another solid performance in what is likely his final Olympic campaign.

Although the world has caught up in terms of basketball talent, there’s still no arguing that Team USA have the edge in terms of overall skill. They count six NBA champions amongst their ranks, and even those who haven’t won a chip are all experienced with making deep playoff runs.

The only other team that can compare to Team USA in terms of talent at the moment are the boys from Canada, who count 11 NBA players in their roster. The kind of overwhelming talent advantage that the two North American powerhouses will continue to make a big difference throughout the tournament. Although reigning MVP Nikola Jokic had a solid game of 20 points, five rebounds, eight assists and four blocks, he didn’t have enough help. Sure Bogdan Bogdanovic also chipped in 14 points and six rebounds, but it was never enough to overcome the juggernaut.

Team USA will face South Sudan in their next game, and they’ll have to keep things serious considering that James had to score a game-winner to take a one-point win over the upstart team from Africa. Serbia Will face Puerto Rico next, and should be able to make short work of them.
