The Philadelphia 76ers greatly underwhelmed in the 2024-25 NBA season, and it’s clear what the No. 1 culprit was: injuries.
The Sixers had a brutal campaign in large part because Joel Embiid still couldn’t stay healthy and Paul George’s body kept breaking down.
That’s not to mention Jared McCain’s and Tyrese Maxey’s injuries that cut their campaigns short. When it was all said and done, the 76ers won just 24 games against 58 losses and missed the NBA Playoffs, a heartbreaking conclusion for a team initially pegged to be among the fiercest contenders for the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
With all that said, injury news is the one thing the 76ers and their fans would like to hear the least in the offseason.
Well, Philly is already dealing with a new one on that front, with rookie guard VJ Edgecombe down with an upper-body issue that will cost him at least one game in the Las Vegas portion of the 2025 NBA Summer League.
“VJ Edgecombe was evaluated by a physician and has been diagnosed with a left thumb sprain. He will be ruled out for tomorrow night’s Summer League game in Las Vegas,” shared Ky Carlin of the Sixers Wire via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The good news for the 76ers is that Edgecombe’s injury doesn’t seem to be anything serious.
“Edgecombe is participating in on-court workouts during his absence and is working closely with the team’s medical staff throughout. He will be reevaluated on Saturday,” shared Carlin in a follow-up post.
There is no reason for the 76ers to force Edgecombe into returning to action, so expect the former Baylor Bears star to take his time healing up from his injury.
Selected third overall by the 76ers in the 2025 NBA draft, Edgecombe averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists through 33 games for Scott Drew’s Bears in the 2024-25 college basketball season.
