Game 3 was a now or never moment for the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs were down 2-0 to the New York Knicks and were going on the road to face the Knicks and the rabid New York crowd. To be down 3-0 would be a virtual death sentence and so a win was a must. Thankfully, Stephon Castle saved his best (so far) for Game 3.

Victor Wembanyama had a gem of a game as well, but it was Castle who had been hearing the flak for his shoddy performances in Games 1 and 2. He was able to find the fine balance between patience and aggressiveness in Game 3 and it led to big shots amid physical defense. More importantly, the composure the 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year displayed pointed to his ability to bounce back and put the series back in order.

Castle was a two-way menace for much of the postseason, but in the 2026 NBA Finals, his solid offense and stout defense have generally been absent. He also figured in what could very well be the pivotal play of the series.

With the way Game 3 has played out, Castle has shown the ability to shake things off and that is not only something rarely seen for someone his age, but it’s also what will be required of him and San Antonio if they want to complete the comeback in this series.

New York has tested them in ways no other team (including the Oklahoma City Thunder) has tested them this season. The Knicks have had the Spurs’ number even in the regular season and their combination of physicality, talent, and ability to perform in the clutch has left San Antonio needing to search for answers when other opponents would easily be beaten on a strong performance from Wembanyama, Castle, and even Dylan Harper.

Winning Game 3, though doesn’t exactly solve anything, but it does give Castle the confidence he needs to be able to sustain his play. The shooting may not always be on point, but his tenacity will help him earn points one way or another. Managing that relentless energy on the defensive end will help him stay on the court, especially with the way the fouls have been called in this series: one game you’re getting called for even a slight touch and in the next, a shove will get you nothing.

Controversial calls aside, the San Antonio Spurs needed a shot in the arm, and Stephon Castle provided it just in the nick of time. Is Castle back? For Game 3, it was a yes, but going forward, it remains to be seen. Nonetheless, the path to glory has resurfaced for Castle, and it’s on him to use it wisely.
