The Indiana Pacers are in for a challenge with injuries and departures hitting them hard. Still, it shouldn’t be lost how much offensive chemistry the rest of the guys have, as seen in the 2025 playoffs. All-Star and one-time NBA Champion Pascal Siakam is there, surrounded by young, talented guys and relentless role players
WHAT’S NEW?
The Pacers enter the 2025–26 season facing massive changes and challenges. The biggest blow came when Tyrese Haliburton, the team’s engine and All-Star leader, tore his Achilles in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. He’s expected to miss the entire season, leaving a gaping hole in Indiana’s offense and leadership. To make matters worse, long-time center Myles Turner left for Milwaukee in free agency after 10 seasons, ending an era for the franchise.
In response, the Pacers acquired Jay Huff, a capable but unproven journeyman big man who flashed potential in Memphis, and re-signed James Wiseman, who’s looking to finally reset his career after missing all but one game last season due to an Achilles tear. With two major pieces gone and others recovering, Indiana is entering a transitional year that will test both its depth and resilience.
BIGGEST QUESTIONS
The most obvious question: how can the Pacers survive without Haliburton and Turner, their two pillars on both ends of the court? Haliburton’s elite playmaking and tempo-setting were the foundation of the team’s offense, while Turner’s rim protection anchored their defense.
The absences thrust Bennedict Mathurin, Andrew Nembhard, Obi Toppin, and Aaron Nesmith into the spotlight, each has shown flashes, but consistency will be key. Who among them can evolve from “promising young player” to dependable nightly performer?
Lastly, Rick Carlisle faces one of the toughest coaching challenges of his career. Known for his adaptability and tactical mastery, can he mold this undermanned Pacers team into another competitive unit? The season could either be a step back or a showcase of Carlisle’s brilliance.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Pascal Siakam becomes the undisputed leader of the Pacers, and the focal point of everything they do. Without Haliburton and Turner, Siakam will carry the bulk of the scoring, playmaking, and leadership responsibilities. Expect him to post monster numbers as he takes full control of the offense.
Meanwhile, Mathurin and Nembhard are poised for breakout campaigns. The former’s explosive athleticism and fearless scoring ability make him a potential 20-point threat every night, though he’ll need to find more consistency and shot discipline. The latter, on the other hand, brings sharp instincts, quick-trigger offense, and underrated playmaking that fits well alongside Siakam. How these two progress will say a lot about Indiana’s direction, both now and beyond this season.
REASON FOR OPTIMISM/CONCERN
There’s reason to believe the Pacers won’t completely collapse without Haliburton. Even when he’s been off the floor, Rick Carlisle’s system has managed to sustain strong offensive rhythm and pace. The core of Siakam, Mathurin, Nembhard, Toppin, McConnell, and Nesmith provides enough versatility and energy to keep Indiana competitive.
Depth and chemistry will once again shine, much like what we witnessed in the 2025 postseason. However, optimism must be tempered: losing two franchise cornerstones is no small matter. Haliburton’s absence leaves a creative void, while Turner’s departure weakens their interior defense. The Pacers may stay scrappy and fast-paced, but sustained success will depend on whether their young core can grow up fast enough.
