It really did come down to the last match to determine who would take the final playoff position in the LPL 2020 Spring Split.

It was a virtual dead split as well, with the odds being identical (1.79) for both Team WE and OMG to win their matchup. Before the series started, both squads had an equal 7-8 record, but Team WE had an advantage on game different at -2 compared to -3, so it would come down to the head-to-head record. Whoever wins the match would save their tournament lives.

It was looking tough for OMG as they had lost their last three series. Team WE, on the other hand, were coming in with high morale after coming up with a big victory against Edward Gaming.

Game 1:

Team WE: Morgan (Ornn), beishang (Kindred), Teacherma (Rumble), Jiumeng (Varus), Missing (Leona)

OMG: Curse (Mordekaiser), H4cker (Trundle), icon (Cassiopeia), Smlz (Miss Fortune), cold (Taric)

Team WE went with a mid-game lineup, compared to OMG who were in with a scaling lineup.

The two teams love to scrap, and it was apparent from the very start of the game.

Curse was first to fall in the second minute, getting ganked by Morgan and beishang. OMG answered by taking out Teacherma, beishang, and Missing while only losing cold.

They got hit back right away and lost cold and icon in the next fight. By the fifth minute, it was 4-3 on the kill score in favor of Team WE.

OMG conceded the first dragon, opting to pick a better spot to pick a fight as they fell behind 1K gold.

By the ninth minute, the kills were tied 5-5 and the gold was even. The frenetic space wouldn’t slow down, with OMG managing to take an 8-6 kill lead though they fell behind 1K in gold again.

The second dragon was not taken quietly, and OMG found the fight they wanted to push their kill advantage 10-6 and tying the gold while also getting themselves a dragon soul. Morgan and cold traded deaths shortly after in the botlane to make it 11-7.

Curse got taken out by beishang in the 16th minute to make it 11-8, and a minute later OMG saw cold, icon and Smlz also taken out while only managing to down beishang for a 12-11 score.

Team WE got their second drake, but Morgan died for the fifth time to make it 13-11.

The two teams looked for a good time to start the baron, but the big fight happened in the midlane, with beishang falling after an excellent bullet time from Smlz to push OMG’s kill lead to 14-11. OMG started the baron and quickly took it down, and chased down Jiumeng, Teacherma, and Missing for a 17-11 kill lead. They took advantage of their numbers to then tie the dragon souls at two apiece.

Team WE wanted the fight in the mid lane in the 25th minute but were again overwhelmed by OMG’s damage as Missing quickly went down. They just didn’t have the damage to cope.

Team WE couldn’t pick off Curse in the top lane in the 28th minute, but were at least able to prevent another one of their towers from falling.

Team WE started the dragon in the 29th minute but lost the fight 3-2 to push OMG’s lead to 21-13. OMG quickly then took down their third dragon, a second baron, and a 6K gold advantage.

OMG pushed into the enemy base in the 32nd minute and won the big fight and took down the game with a final 24-14 score and 10K gold advantage. They certainly looked like the team that was fighting for their lives and came away with a convincing win.

Smlz led with 27.6K damage and 7/2/11 performance. H4cker only did 8K damage, but he had a phenomenal 3/0/16 performance and was named MVP.

Morgan couldn’t hit properly with his call of the forge god in the first game, and that cost Team WE heavily in the team fights as he struggled while putting out a 2/6/2 performance.

Game 2:

Team WE: Morgan (Renekton), beishang (Jarvan IV), Teacherma (Galio), Jiumeng (Varus), Missing (Nautilus)

OMG: Curse (Mordekaiser), H4cker (Trundle), icon (Kled), Smlz (Miss Fortune), cold (Taric)

It was Team WE with their backs against the wall in the second game of the series. They didn’t opt to ban Trundle or Miss Fortune, even with the success H4cker and Smlz found against them in game 1. It was a case of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ for OMG, with their only change being icon’s Kled.

It was a much larger change for Team WE, who went with Renekton, Jarvan IV, Galio, Varus, and Nautilus as they also switched sides.

Curse was again the first casualty of the game, this time falling in the sixth minute. It was clear, though, that Team WE were not looking to get caught out pushing too aggressively. They picked their spots more carefully, taking out Curse again in the eighth minute.

Team WE pulled out the ace in the ninth minute, wiping out all of OMG for a 7-0 lead along with the herald.

It was a 4K gold lead and an 8-0 kill lead by the tenth minute for Team WE. Morgan certainly redeemed himself with a 5/0/2 performance by this point and had a 5K gold advantage.

OMG were in shambles, making simple mental mistakes and consistently losing team fights. In the 13th minute it was an 11-1 kill lead for Team WE.

OMG got deleted again in the 17th minute, with a 17-1 lead for Team WE and a 9K gold lead before the baron had even spawned. Team WE were already making their first push into the OMG base by the 19th minute. The same bullet time that Smlz used so effectively in game 1 had barely any effect in the team fights.

Team WE traded five kills to one in the 23rd minute at the baron, pushing their lead to 22-2.

It was game over in the 26th minute, with Team WE finishing with a 28-3 kill lead and 14K gold advantage.

Beishang was the MVP as he finished 2/0/18 with 10K damage, while Morgan finished 8/0/6 with 18K damage in a redeeming performance for Team WE. Teacherma also had over 18K damage with an 8/1/11 record.

Curse struggle for OMG the entire game, finishing 1/9/1 while H4cker ended the game 0/5/1.

Game 3:

Team WE: Morgan (Renekton), beishang (), Teacherma (Jarvan IV), Jiumeng (Ash), Missing (Nautilus)

OMG: Curse (Mordekaiser), H4cker (Trundle), icon (Kled), Smlz (Varus), cold (Taric)

All the momentum was with Team WE in the deciding game, thanks to the dramatic turnaround they showed in game 2.

Such a dominant defeat would be a tough mental hurdle for OMG to clear, and the big question was whether they would be able to keep their emotions in check in potentially their final game of the split. They switched back to the red side to try to pull off the victory.

Curse continued with tradition and was the first one to fall, this time in the third minute. WE grabbed the first drake and the 1K gold advantage in the sixth minute.

The gold lead increased to 2K for Team WE in the 10th minute as they also took down the top lane T1 turret.

OMG simply had on answer for the rest of the match. They were outplayed, outwitted, and thoroughly dominated in what ended up being a perfect game for Team WE – who finished with a 12-0 kill lead, 13K gold advantage, nine towers, one inhibitor, one baron, and four dragons.

Team WE’s path to the playoffs looked difficult, with their 6-6 record before their final four games, but their win over EDG and then the dramatic comeback from 1-0 down against OMG today solidified the final playoff position.

It won’t hurt that they joined some of the world’s legendary squads with their perfect game, and now it’s time to see what they can do in a best of five series.

Everyone on Team WE deserves credit for that clinching game. It was a masterful performance.
