Since it’s the offseason and we’re looking at weird records that people have had, we decided to take a look at who had the worst field goal percentage in the NBA.
Of course, we had to qualify this, and so don’t take this too seriously, as our guidelines were simple. To qualify for the list, players had to take at least 500 jumpshots during the regular season.
#10: Max Strus: 41.8%
Although Max Strus gave us an all-time highlight with his long buzzer beater against the Mavericks, he didn’t fare very well overall from the field. He hit his mark of 41.8% from the field with 728 shot attempts.
#9: Fred VanVleet and Saddiq Bey: 41.6%
We have a tie for 10th place between two players who had vastly different roles on their teams. One of them is Fred VanVleet, who was the starting point guard for the Houston Rockets after signing a $130 million contract in the 2023 offseason. He took 1,018 shots to end with 41.6% from the field.
Saddiq Bey, on the other hand, was far below the pecking order with only 697 shot attempts.
#8: Jordan Poole and Jordan Clarkson: 41.3%
It’s kind of funny that two players named Jordan share this spot on the list.
Jordan Poole has been clowned a lot for his performances since moving to the Washington Wizards, and for good reason. With a green light to shoot at will on a rebuilding team, Poole managed to make 41.3% of his attempts while taking 1,186 shots.
Jordan Clarkson, on the other hand, wasn’t supposed to be the best player on his team and is specifically in the NBA because he’s not afraid to take a shot. He took 816 shots during the season.
#7: Dalano Banton: 40.4%
I’m not going to lie, I was unfamiliar with Dalano Banton’s game, and probably for good reason. Banton, who signed with the Boston Celtics last summer before being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in February of 2024, made 40.4% of his 500 field goal attempts for the season.
#6: Tim Hardaway Jr.: 40.2%
Tim Hardaway Jr.’s dad thinks he could be a true volume scorer, but his stats say otherwise. After taking 976 shots for the Dallas Mavericks, he only managed to make 40.2% of them.
#5: Royce O’Neale: 39.7%
Royce O’Neale played for both the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns in the 2023-24 season and did not have a good time scoring the ball. He only made 39.7% of his shots.
#4: Spencer Dinwiddie: 39.2%
Spencer Dinwiddie has spent a bit of time bouncing around teams the last few years, and you can kind of see why. His mark of 39.2% on 640 attempts made it a little difficult to justify keeping him in lineups when his main talent is supposed to be offense. It probably also doesn’t help Dinwiddie’s reputation after he went to Brooklyn in the Kyrie Irving trade and then the Mavericks went to the NBA Finals.
#3 Keyonte George: 39.1%
Like Jordan Clarkson, Keyonte George gets a bit of a pass because he’s playing on a rebuilding Utah Jazz team whose main main is Lauri Markannen (at least until he finds a new home). George nailed 39.1% of his 815 shots for the season. George also has a lot of potential, so he’ll get a bit more leeway from fans unlike some of the other people on this list.
#2 Scoot Henderson: 38.5%
Scoot Henderson did not have the rookie season that he envisioned for himself after being taken third in the 2023 NBA Draft. All rookies are expected to have some growing pains, but Henderson set a really rough record for himself. He first became the player with the second-worst plus/minus in NBA history with -56, and then later in the season beat his own record to take the top spot with a -58 game. Henderson also only made 38.5% of his 797 shot attempts.
#1 Alec Burks: 36.9%
Alec Burks was put into a bunch of weird spots over the 2023-24 season. First he was a part of the historically bad Detroit Pistons, but then found himself traded to the New York Knicks in February 2024. Although he didn’t shoot the ball well, making 36.9% of his 569 shot attempts, he did find himself a place in the Knicks’ rotation as more and more people started to go down during their playoff run.
